Bar 1661

Dublin, Ireland

This community-minded Dublin bar has all the hallmarks of a great pub, from its decor to its relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, but it’s also so much more. Bar 1661 takes its name from the year that Irish spirit poitín became illegal, which it remained until 1997, and is dedicated to its revival. Indeed the man behind the bar, Dave Mulligan, is the founder of modern poitín brand Bán, although you’ll find no shortage of other expressions on the back bar. This fascinating, diverse spirit is the star of the show when it comes to Bar 1661’s cocktails too, featured in a number of the many options on its menu, alongside other Irish products. There’s plenty to choose from, but any visit should include at least one of the bar’s signature Belfast Coffees, made with poitín and cold brew coffee – not to mention a Ban and Black Boilermaker, consisting of a shot of poitín alongside a pint of Guinness.
