Chef Chet Sharma has earned his stripes. After completing a PhD in physics, he went on to work in high-flying kitchens like The Ledbury, Moor Hall and Gymkhana before opening this pink-hued ode to Indian cuisine. The name – Urdu for “lady of the house” – references the chef’s earliest muses, his grandmothers. Amid interiors reminiscent of old glamour train travel (tiled floors, low-lit lamps and delicate paisley-printed wallpaper), a single evening tasting menu of whip-smart modern Indian cooking is served. Every meal starts with Sharma’s now legendary elevated take on classic British Quavers crisps: delicate scrolls of bubbled poppadom flavoured with Wookey Hole Cheddar to be enjoyed with a multi-layered green chutney and mango dip. Arrive early for a cocktail - utilising Southeast Asian flavours, like calamansi, mango and ambrette seed to shake up Sandalwood Manhattans and Monsoon Martinis, the bar is worthy of a visit alone. In what’s now a crowded scene, this restaurant was one of the original pioneers of the new take on Indian flavours that has recently swept the UK capital.
