This lavish property comes with a rich past. César Ritz – perhaps the world’s most famous hotelier – first flung open the doors in 1894. The towering columned facade, in a striking palazzo cloistered from the main tourist drag. sets the tone. Frescoes still adorn its iconic staircase and the original wooden elevators remain, though the property has been stylishly modernised (by Pierre-Yves Rochon) for today’s no-less illustrious clientele. Delivering the kind of lobby made for people watching – an indoor piazza of sorts that pays due reverence to Ritz’s original winter garden – the voluminous space features a towering glass dome, belle époque mouldings, hand-blown Venetian chandeliers and sumptuous seating. There’s glitz, sure, but it’s restrained and balanced. Gold, silver and bronze are used freely to accent,while heavy drapes, busts and grand decorative pieces sit against pared-back creams and soft blues. Bedrooms, served by butlers, are awash with fine linens, antiques and homely touchpoints. Elsewhere, a rolling programme of art exhibitions in collaboration with Galleria Continua sees installations across the space. And the luminous bar and restaurant, Lumen, delivers deco touches and a delightful modern menu of tempting dishes with international inflections.
