On the Pass

Kelvin Cheung

The man behind it all: Kelvin Cheung moved to the UAE in 2021 after a 10-year-long stint in India to open Jun’s. A third-generation Chinese-Canadian chef, he grew up in Chicago and worked in kitchens across North America, Hong Kong and the subcontinent in the early stages of his career.

A fusion menu: While the word ‘fusion’ can strike fear in the hearts of many a gourmand, this melding of North American, Indian and Asian flavours somehow seems to work. The menu almost feels like a smorgasbord of the chef’s life so far, but it all blends into a cohesive package. Diners can find dishes such as burrata-topped kulcha (Persian pita), alongside a prawn cheese toast – inspired by the humble toasties of his childhood – served with his mother’s Singapore-style coconut curry. There are also plenty of options for vegan and vegetarian diners.

The dining room: The restaurant is located on prime real estate with stunning views of the Burj Khalifa. Inside, the teal marble floor with dark furnishings and bronze accents create a luxurious ambience.

What makes it special: When Chef Cheung arrives at your table to explain the dishes, it’s his vibrant personality and the stories behind every dish that adds a little extra to the already buzzing atmosphere.
